Within the Domain Eukarya (which includes all organism with a nucleus and membrane bound organelles) there are considered to be four or five kingdoms,
depending on whose classification scheme you believe. Plants and Animals are fairly obvious. Fungi, as described herein, are very distinct from the other kingdoms. The Kingdom Protista is a “dumping ground” for organisms that don’t fit into the first three kingdoms. The kingdom Stramenopila includes organisms such as the former fungi Oomycota as well as brown algae (the kelps) and several other types of algae. It is likely the Protista will become 10-12 kingdoms in the coming years.
