Key Characteristics: Trees with alternately arranged, pinnately veined leaves with doubly toothed margins. Leaf is asymetrical and much narrower than those of Tilia. The two species on campus are often difficult to distinguish. Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra ) usually has a rough upper surface, American elm usually has a smooth upper surface but this is not absolute.
