Tilia / Basswood
Key Characteristics: Trees with toothed, alternately arranged pinnately-veined leaves. The leaves are asymmetrical but are much broader than elm. The bud at the apex is not an apical bud. In the spring, the apex of the shoot abscesses and the lateral bud at the end becomes a pseudo-terminal bud. Look for the shoot scar to make this determination.
