Populus / Poplar
Key Characteristics: Trees with simple, alternately arranged leaves. Leaves are pinnately veined with a toothed margin. The two most common species on campus both have flattened petioles (rub the petiole between you fingers). Leaves are bilaterally symmetrical with a broad base or midsection and end in an acute point. These trees are most common along the lake shore. Cottonwood becomes massive.
