  • plasmogamy—cell fusion
  • karyogamy—nuclear fusion
  • Meiosis

These are essential steps in all life cycles. However in most kinds of organisms we only talk about fertilization (plasmogamy immediately followed by karyogamy), but in fungi, these two events may be separated in time by seconds, minutes, hours, days, years or centuries.
