Lack of Chlorophyll profoundly affects the lifestyle of fungi:

• not dependent on light

• can occupy dark habitats

• can grow in any direction

• can invade the interior of the substrate with absorptive filaments

Another difference between fungi and plants is that fungi are not photosynthetic. (but remember there are about 3000 species of plants that are non-photosynthetic too!). These are some of the consequences of fungi being heterotrophic.
