Heat of Respiration

Skunk Cabbage

Symplocarpus foetidus

This plant is common to wet areas in Wisconsin. Early in the spring it can generate enough heat through respiration to literally melt its way through the snow. This is advantageous as it gives the plant an early jump on the season.

We will see these plants during our arboretum fieldtrip this semester.
