Typically leaves are modified for photosynthesis. Part of a leaf (the blade) is thin and flat allowing for rapid diffusion of gasses, and makes optimal use of materials to collect light. Part of the leaf is stem-like and connects the blade to the stem. This is the petiole. Note that leaves are genetically programed to only grow to a particular size and shape, and that, after maturity, no new growth occurs.
