North American Mycological Association foray
Return to the NAMA 2005 page.
Hi Everyone. If you found this page you'll be one of about 175 people to come to the NAMA foray in La Crosse! We have many special activities planned, with excellent forays and lectures by leading mycologists. It's been relatively dry here, but we'll try to find some wet spots for collecting. For that reason PLEASE DO NOT COLLECT WITHIN A RADIUS OF 25 MILES FROM LA CROSSE FOR ONE WEEK BEFORE THE FORAY, OR DURING THE FORAY, especially Hixon Forest, Perrot State Park, Seven Bridges trail, or Goose Island. If you want to stop somewhere along the way here, please try to check with me about a particular spot. If need be, we will be sending out small groups to small areas.
Here's an interesting idea. Some of you are coming from areas that have had much more rain than we have had here, and some of you have been inundated with rain from Hurricane Dennis. Please bring some mushrooms with you for the display area. It's a good chance to show off your finds. Even if it's something you consider to be common, we'd like to see it. Thanks! It will be fun.
Here is the schedule for activities Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Here is your Parking Permit for UW-La Crosse. Please print and bring with you to the foray. Follow directions for the display of the permit.
We will have two separate forays to the chestnuts, Friday morning and Friday afternoon. The morning foray will likely collect most of the fungi there, so we will hold a "lottery" to determine who will be able to go on the first trip. There will be room for everyone on the afternoon trip, but that trip will be mostly a tour, since the morning group will have picked most of the fungi.

The foray usually concludes by about 1 pm on Sunday (Sun lunch is included), although there are no formal activities on Sunday except for the walks around the table by mycologists. Those are always very informative.
For trustees and others arriving early, registration will be at Coate Hall, your dorm. Please see below for directions on how to get there.
Here is a list of Presenters and their talks. Here is the schedule for activities Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Instructions for arrival at UW-L
If you are arriving by plane at the La Crosse Airport, you will be about 6 miles from the campus. If you let me know in advance at volk.thom@uwlax.edu we can try to pick you up from the airport and bring you to campus if you let me know the airline, flight number, number of people in your party, and expected time of arrival. The airport is probably smaller than the airport you're used to, so it should be easy to find someone with a NAMA sign. If we don't hear from you in advance, we won't be able to pick you up. There are cabs and rental cars available. If you're landing in Minneapolis or Madison, you're on your own.
From the West: Exit
Interstate I-90 at Onalaska Highway 157 (Exit 4). Turn right on Highway 157 and
then right again onto Highway 16. Drive 3.5 miles and turn right on La Crosse
Street and then left on East Avenue to campus.
From the North: Highways 61 on the
Minnesota side of the Mississippi and 53 on the Wisconsin side both junction
with Interstate I-90.
If traveling south on Highway 61, go east on I-90 to Highway 157
(Exit 4). Turn right onto Highway 157 and then right again onto Highway
16. Drive 3.5 miles and turn right on La Crosse Street and then left on
East Avenue to campus.
If traveling south on Highway 53 (go over I-90 at Exit 4). Follow
Highway 157 to Highway 16. Turn right on Highway 16. Drive 3.5 miles
and turn right on La Crosse Street and then left on East Avenue to campus.
From the East: Travelers heading west to La Crosse on Interstate
I-90 exit at Onalaska-La Crosse Highway 16 (Exit 5). Turn left onto Highway
16. Drive 4.8 miles and right on La Crosse Street and then left on East Avenue
to campus.
An alternative scenic route from the east (from Madison) is Hwy 14, which goes through the driftless area of Wisconsin from the west side of Madison. If you have time, it a great drive, and only takes about a half hour to 45 minutes more. Once you reach La Crosse, turn right on Mormon Coulee Road. Go about a mile and turn right on Losey Boulevard, Hwy 16 (there's a light). Take Losey Blvd. through residential areas till you reach La Crosse St (there's a light) and see a big open area and bluffs ahead of you. Turn left on La Crosse St. then left on East Avenue at the light.
From the South: Highway 14, 61, and 35
enter the city on the South. Follow the green "UW-La Crosse" signs north on
Losey Boulevard to Highway 16 (3.0 miles). Turn left on La Crosse Street and
then left on East Avenue to campus.
ONCE YOU GET TO EAST AVENUE: The East Avenue turn has a traffic light, along with a boulevard, with a large sign for the campus in the middle of the boulevard. Once you turn onto East Avenue toward the campus, there will be signs for registration, which will be in 116 Cowley Hall.
You will eventually need a parking permit (provided at no charge), but you can park in Parking Lot 2 behind the stadium (if you were sitting in the seats in the stadium, Parking Lot 2 would be behind you.) Unfortunately, they are reconstructing the parking lot at Cowley Hall, where most of the activities will be taking place. You can enter Cowley Hall at that end and walk down the hallway and take a sharp turn left then right in the hallway. Registration will be the first door on the left in that main hallway, Room 116 Cowley Hall. Regular registration will begin about 11am on Thursday. All room keys can be picked up in Coate Hall, the dorm in which you will be staying. A preforay foray will take place staring about 2 pm.
For trustees and others arriving Tuesday, we will have registration and key distribution in Coate Hall, the dorm in which you will be staying.
Most of the activities will be taking place in Cowley Hall with meals and evening lectures in the Cartwright Center. The residence Hall is Coate Hall, number 3 on the campus map. It's on the other corner of the campus from Cowley Hall, but the campus is not very big, so it's not very far. There is also a parking lot at Coate Hall.
