Welwitschia
mirabilis- Welwitchia (Welwitchiaceae)
This Paleo-mega-endemic is found only in the Namib Desert
in southwestern Africa. Note the peculiar morphology- a caudex
producing only 2 leaves (each with a basal meristem) and an immensely
long taproot. The taproot serves to anchor the plant and does
not absorb or transport water. Leaf at maturity reaches 6-8 feet
long and 3 feet wide. It virtually never rains where this plant
grows; it has adapted by getting its water via dew absorbed by
stomata on the upper leaf surface.
