A representative of a small family that is endemic to southwestern Madagascar. The family contains only 11 species in 4 genera. It looks much like the American Cactaceae. Its relationships were mysterious until recently, when numerous lines of evidence show that it is in the caryophyllales and, hence, related to the cacti of the New World.
