These long-lived monocarps called "century plants", though none actually live that long, are from hot, American deserts. Many species furnish fiber and soap, while others produce the Mexican drinks: Pulque, Tequila and Mescal. Compare these New World succulents with their Old World analogs, Aloe (Liliaceae).
