 Rhizophora mangle- Red Mangrove (Rhizophoraceae)

The dominant mangrove in the Neotropics, especially prevalent close to the sea. Several adaptations to the halophytic life-style (plants capable of thriving on salt impregnated soils) are evident: tough, evergreen leaves; prop roots. Pneumatophores (air-bladder of shore or marsh plants) are evident on mature plants. Several species are the chief source of tannin, used in curing leather.
