Eucalyptus-
Eucalypt, Australian Gum, Blue Gum
(Myrtaceae)
A characteristic genus of Australia, containing over 500 species,
with only two or three extending north into Malaysia, east of
Wallace's line. Much cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions
throughout the world as a fast growing source of timber, firewood,
essential oils and tannins. Eucalyptus globulus
is naturalized in California, and areas there that were originally
grassland would revert to eucalypt woodlands in abscence of human
disturbance.
