Calliandra
haematocephala- Red Powderpuff (Mimosoideae
subfamily of Fabaceae)
This species is native to Bolivia. This genus (about 200 species
around the world) is one of many important legume trees in tropical
forests (along with Acacia, Mimosa,
Inga, etc). The tree is mycorrhizal and can restore
fertility to tropical soils. The flowers are individually quite
small but are clustered in large and showy "bottle brush"
inflorescences. The red coloration of the flowers and the extention
of the stamens suggest what pollination?
