Distribution: The family
has two species, one endemic to the Balkan region of India and
the other confined to the island of Socotra. Its long association
with humans has caused its more widespread distribution.
Economic Uses: As the source
of the pomegranate, which also gives us the fermented drink grenadine.
The bark is used in Egypt for tanning leather and in medicine.

Features of Interest: The unique characters
of the fruit and hypanthium make it distinct in the order Rosales.
