Distribution: Widespread
in the temperate Northern Hemisphere and in the warmer regions
of the Southern Hemisphere.
Economic Uses: Widely cultivated
as an ornamental shrub, due in part to the distinctive red stems
of the dogwoods, which provide 'winter interest' to landscaped
yards. Some species are used as a source of furniture wood, while
the French distill a drink from the fruits.

various genera have been defined as separate families, but it
is generally agreed that they form one family.
