Distribution: Widespread
in warmer climates and some in temperate regions.
Economic Uses: Extremely
important as the source of tablegrapes, raisins and wine grapes.
Commonly cultivated as well for the climbing ornamentals Virginia
creeper and Boston ivy.
Defining
Features of Interest: The family is
mostly vines and is easily recognized by its distinctive leaf
morphology and the tendrils opposite them.
Fossil Evidence: Seed and
pollen fossils from the Eocene and some questionable fossils from
the Upper Cretaceous.
