Distribution: Subtropical and tropical Africa and Asia as well as the temperate regions of the Old and New World.

 

Economic Uses: The family is best known economically as the source of the highly cultivated annual bedding and pot plant-impatiens.

Defining Features of Interest: The family has fleshy, translucent stems. The flower has a spur that originate from the calyx, not from the receptacle tissue as in other families.
