Monoecious trees with spirally arranged leaves. Essentually an evergreen group though Larix is deciduous. Microsporangia are borne in pairs on the microsporophylls and ovules are borne in pairs on the seed scales. The group ranges throughout the northern hemisphere and is extensively planted in the southern. Includes ecologically and economically important genera including pine, spruce, hemlock and Douglas fir. Individuals of bristle-cone pine (Pinus longavea) are the world's oldest trees.
