Section 1: The Cast of Characters: Life Cycles
|
|
The
cast of characters includes the major groups of the kingdom Plantae.
This outline groups plants by morphological similarities, not by
their phylogenetic (evolutionary) relationships.

Non-vascular plants (Bryophytes)
Hepaticopsida
(Marchantia: liverworts)
Bryopsida-mosses
|
|
Vascular Plants (Tracheophytes)
Pteridophytes, non-seed vascular plants, ferns and fern allies
Psilopsids
(Psilotum:, whisk fern)
Lycopsids, lycopods
(Lycopodium, Selaginella: clubmoss)
Sphenopsids, horsetails
(Equisetum: horsetail)
Pteropsids, ferns
(Nephrolepis: ruffles; Cyrtonium: holly fern)
|
|
Seed plants, phanerogams, and spermatophytes

maidenhair tree)

Mormon tea)

Plant Life Cycle- Alternation of Generations
The life cycle of all plants consists of two parts or phases: a sporophytic generation and a gametophytic generation. The sporophytic and gametophytic generations ordinarily alternate with each other, hence the expression "alternation of generations."
