Woody Plants Image Collection U.W.-Madison Botany Department This collection of images was assembled for the use of students taking dendrology (Botany 402) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Dendrology is the study of woody plants. These includes trees: erect woody plants usually with one central trunk; shrubs: erect plants with numerous woody stems; and vines: woody plants that require an erect substrate for support. These categories are not mutually exclusive, but all three growth forms are included. Given the nature of the study of dendrology, there is considerable overlap with taxonomy. Indeed, dendrology is the study of a subset of plants from many different phylogenies. Hence, there exist other images appropriate to dendrology in our Plant Systematics collection. Both of these image sets exist as gopher resources. Pictures from the University of Wisconsin Botany Department image collections may be freely copied and used for instruction in different contexts as long as they are not included in a copyrighted or net-worked project. In these cases written permission is required. Any use of these images should include credit to the U.W.-Madisons botanical image collection, including credit to the contributor. This information is provided in the name of every image file where the initials of the contributor is included. A list of contributors is provided below: KS = Ken Sytsma DK = Darren Kimmbler MC = Mike Clayton VK = Virginia Kline Any question about use of our images should be directed to Mike Clayton (clayton@facstaff.wisc.edu) the editor/producer of these teaching collections. Credits: This collection was developed and organized largely through the efforts of a dedicated undergraduate, Darrin Kimmbler. Darrin took dendrology in 1995. We provided him with a camera and access to equipment to digitize his photographs, and he did the rest. His efforts constitute a lasting legacy that will enhance the learning experience of students for decades to come. Mike Clayton May 30, 1997
