69. 2003. Royal Botanical Garden/Kew/England. 6/10/2003. "2002/3 - the specimens which flowered in 2002 and 2003 were grown both from seed donated to Kew in 1995 and from tiny micro propagated plants received from the botanic garden in Bonn in 1995. To build up the storage corms, they were potted on into 750 liters (198 Gal.) containers in 1999 although they were in full leaf at the time. When the leaves died down, the largest corm was placed in a 1,000 liters (264 Gal.) pot and the two smaller ones were put into new compost in 750 liter pots. For the next 14 months, they were grown behind the scenes at Kew in their Tropical Nursery. The plants were fed regularly with a high potash liquid fertilizer. In January 2002, while the plants were dormant, they were potted up again. The largest of the three corms, one of those grown from seed, weighed an astonishing 75 kg (165 pounds). As the new bud started to emerge the plant was transferred to the Princess of Wales Conservatory. During the day, the temperature is at least 24ºC and at night it drops no lower than 19ºC. The humidity is maintained at 70-80% mimicking the conditions prevailing in the plant's original rainforest" habitat. http://www.kew.org/plants/titan/timeline2003.html

74. 2004. University of Connecticut/Storrs/USA. 7/6/2004. Spadix grew to 1.5 m. (4 feet, 11 inches) high. "Corm repotted; Corm weighed 89.5 pounds and was 0.54 m. (21 inches) in diameter. Corm in good shape and repotted into herbaceous mix in new 45 gallon container. Since they were doubtful whether pollination was successful, they opted to voucher the inflorescence shortly after it toppled. It did stink really bad, but never fully reflexed as most do. We suspect that one (or both) of two things caused this bloom to act abnormally. First, due to decreased steam during summer months, the tropical house frequently dips into the mid to lower 15.5 C. (60' F) at night, even with thermostats wide open. Secondly, there were 24 hour security lights on just outside the greenhouse due to a construction project - this presumably threw off the plants circadian rhythm and thus the delay and unusual flowering times". http://florawww.eeb.uconn.edu/Titanum/index.html
75. 2004. Stephen F. Austin State University/ Mast Arboretum/Nacogdoches/Texas/USA. 7/12/2004. Spadix grew to 1.55 m. (5 feet, 1 inch) high. The SFA plant was received June 1, 2000 as a dorman fist-sized corm from Russell Adams of Gainesville Tree Farm in Florida. Corm weight was 11.80 kg. (26 pounds) in March 2004. "Big Jack" took four years to bloom. Fresh pollen from the University of Connecticut plant (which was just finishing bloom) was used in a pollination attempt; however, that failed. Pollen from "Big Jack" was shipped to Disney world plant and that pollination attempt failedas well. Jack collapsed after 91 hours open. 118. 2007. University of California/ Davis/ USA. 5/7/2007 Ted blooms again - This will be his third blooming since June 2003. Ted is Amorphophallus titanum, "The Corpse Flower". Over 4 feet. Ted the Titan", a Titan Arum or Corpse Flower, has bloomed at the San Francisco Flower Conservatory (May 30th - June 1st, 2005). Like many others I was curiously drawn to catch a view of this odd specimen, seeing as how it produces the largest reproductive structure in the plant world every 6-10 years, emits an odor reminiscent of rotting food or flesh and the blooms last only 3-4 days. "Ted the Titan", on loan from the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory, is merely 10 years old. http://greenhouse.ucdavis.edu/conservatory/index.html
119. 2007. Gustavus Adolphus college/St. Peter/ MN/USA. 5/13/2007. Nick Name: Perry Mummy. The pollen will be stored at -80 C in gelatin capsules over powdered milk as a desiccant, awaiting mating with another Titan Arum. Fourteen years of careful cultivation came to a fuming fruition at Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday night, just in time to give mom a smelly treat for Mother's Day.
120. 2007. United States Botanic Garden/ Washington D.C./USA. 7/1/2007. On June 25, the 57-inch tall plant was brought to the U.S. Botanic Garden for display because our Conservatory provides an opportunity for the public to see the plant. Staff and visitors alike speculated as to when this titan arum would be in full bloom and when the "corpse-like" smell it emits would become apparent. The spadix had grown one foot - to 69" - by June 30, and the dramatic blooming process commenced late that afternoon with the unfurling of the spathe and the emission of the rotting meat odor. The bloom was fully open by early the next morning, July 1. Within 24 hours, the spathe closed up again and blooming had ceased.

Ross Koning Professor of Biology. koning@easternct.edu. 860-465-5327."Rhea" is a 2001 offspring of Big Bucky (UW) and Mr. Magnificent (Selby), blooming in just under 6 years from seed in a 55% shade greenhouse. The spadix reached 171 cm from spathe node to tip of appendix. The spathe opened between 5:30 and 9:30 PM on August 30, 2007. By mid-day August 31 the spathe had folded back up around the spadix. Pollen was starting to shed on September 1. Pollen was collected on September 2 and September 3 and kept refrigerated over the Labor Day weekend. On September 4 the pollen was sent in insulated pack with gel-ice, but separated from the pollen by newspaper and several layers of bubble wrap to keep pollen from freezing, and sent overnight express mail to Lehman College, CUNY to attempt pollination with Big Mozy. The twin of Rhea was named Hyperion which was cultured in a sunny greenhouse and remains vegetative. http://plantphys.info/greenhouse/Titan2007.html
127. 2007. The City University of New York/Lehman College Greenhouse/West. Bronx/New York. September 2007. It took 5 years of care, but our Amorphophallus titanum is sending up its first inflorescence. The corm weighed 65.5 pounds at last transplant. This was grown from a seed that I received from our good friend Mohammad Fayyaz at U. Wisconsin Madison in 2002. Offspring of"Big Bucky" and "Mister Magnificent". Plant named "Big Mozy" in honor of its progenitors as well as our beloved seed dispenser (Mohammad Mehdi Fayyaz). http://www.lehman.edu/deannss/biology/greenhouse.html

149. 2008. University of Connecticut/Storrs/USA. 7/ 9t/2008. We had one flower May 12th, 2007 and a second one follow up three weeks later on June 1st (both Friday evenings). The odd thing here is that our May 12th, 2007 blossom senesced (repotted at 92#) and was dormant for 12 full months before putting up another inflorescence this year WITHOUT an intervening leaf stage. This specimen bloomed this past Tuesday evening and this flower (this corm's third) was 5 inches taller than last years, though one would expect the corm was somewhat diminished over last years.
150. 2008. Smith College/Northampton/Massachusetts/USA . July /20-21/2008. After three years, our Titan Arum is getting ready to bloom again. The first flowering in Massachusetts of the rare and remarkable Titan Arum happened in August 2005 in the Lyman Conservatory at The Botanic Garden of Smith College. After it finishes flowering, the plant produce a giant leaf. We projected that it would be another 3 to 5 years before this particular plant would flower ag7in. So, it is right on target, flowering in July 2008!
